Saudi Aramco CEO calls phasing out oil and gas a ‘fantasy’

Saudi Aramco President and CEO Amin H Nasser said that the current energy transition strategy is ‘visibly failing’ on a number of fronts and has called on countries to abandon the ‘fantasy’ of phasing out oil and gas. The contentious remarks from the head of the world’s largest oil producer were made in the same week as a new report from IRENA concludes that an ‘urgent global course correction’ is needed to meet the COP28 goal of tripling renewables power capacity by 2030.

As global emissions hit record high, world enters climate crunch time, warns UNEP report

Continuing current climate policies could ‘lead to a catastrophic temperature rise of up to 3.1°C’, warns the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in its latest annual Emissions Gap Report. However, it adds that the 1.5°C goal set out in the Paris Agreement is ‘still technically possible to meet’, but ‘only with a G20-led massive global mobilisation to cut all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, starting today’.

EU approaches 2030 wind energy target

The European Union’s target of wind accounting for 35% of electricity generation in 2030 is within reach following improvements in permitting and a rebound in investments this past year, according to the latest analysis from WindEurope. However, obstacles remain, with the biggest threat now to the accelerated expansion of wind being the timely expansion of Europe’s onshore and offshore electricity grids.

New country named as biggest wind energy market outside China in global survey

India has beaten the US and Germany to become the biggest wind market outside China for the first time, according to BloombergNEF’s (BNEF) latest global analysis. Meanwhile, Chinese turbine manufacturers hold the top six positions in BNEF’s league table for the sector. Most recently, Envision Energy, which holds second place in the ranking, reports that its first typhoon-ready turbine in the Philippines has been installed. Elsewhere, the UK government has unveiled tariff reforms that will cut costs for wind energy manufacturers based in the UK.
