UK budget extends energy subsidies and supports carbon capture and mini-nuclear reactors – but overlooks energy efficiency and renewables

Jeremy Hunt’s first budget as UK Chancellor of the Exchequer brought welcome relief to hard-pressed energy consumers, froze the fuel duty cut, and promised to pump billions into carbon capture and storage projects as well as support the development of small nuclear reactors. However, there was no support for energy efficiency initiatives or significant renewable energy infrastructure investment, despite lobbying by numerous industry and non-governmental organisation groups, writes New Energy World's Brian Davis.

UK government unveils record budget for renewables auction, while raising oil and gas windfall tax

The new Labour government has announced that a record £1.5bn will be available to clean energy projects under this month’s renewables auction round, with £1.1bn on offer to offshore wind developers. It has also raised the Energy Profit Levy (also known as the oil and gas windfall tax) and extended it to 2030.

UK government pushes back green deadlines in run up to net zero

The UK Prime Minister extended the deadlines for a number of green policies last week but vowed to still meet the government’s ultimate net zero by 2050 target. However, Rishi Sunak’s pledge for a ‘fairer’ path to net zero whilst ‘easing the financial burden on British families’, was decried by many as undermining business confidence, putting at risk future investment and economic recovery, and, ultimately, running the danger of missing net zero by 2050.

Wylfa confirmed as the UK’s first SMR site

The UK government’s ambition to lead a ‘new nuclear age’ took a major step forward last week with the announcement that Wylfa, on the coast of Ynys Môn (Anglesey) in North Wales, will host the UK’s first small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear power plant. While the news was welcomed by the UK energy sector, it also prompted a rare public rebuke from the US.

China’s next five-year plan backs clean energy but leaves emissions targets unclear, says CREA

China has released the draft outline of its 15th Five-Year Plan, setting out the country’s economic, energy and climate priorities for the period 2026–2030. The blueprint is broadly supportive of clean energy development, including a target to reduce CO₂ emissions per unit of GDP – carbon intensity – by 17% compared to 2005 levels between 2026–2030.

The Council of the European Union (EU) has formally adopted a raft of new energy rules, including a revised Energy Efficiency Directive, Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) and the FuelEU maritime initiative, that aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions and tackle climate change.
