UK government plans to overhaul nuclear power plant planning rules in a year when global nuclear generation is set to hit an all-time high

The UK government has announced a significant overhaul of planning rules to facilitate the development of nuclear power plants, particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Meanwhile, global nuclear generation is set to hit an all-time high this year, according to the International Energy Agency.

UN chief calls for a windfall tax and advertising ban for fossil fuels

UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for a windfall tax on the profits of fossil fuel companies to help pay for the fight against climate change, as well as an outright ban on fossil fuel advertising. Meanwhile, newly published reports suggest no new fossil fuel projects will be needed in the transition to net zero; stronger plans are needed to meet the COP28 goal of tripling global renewable capacity by 2030; and Europe is in danger of missing its 2030 net zero targets.

Urgent call for action for long-duration energy storage in the UK

The UK Parliament’s Science and Technology Committee’s new report on long-duration energy storage says the government must act fast to ensure that energy storage technologies can scale up in time to decarbonise the electricity system and ensure energy security by 2035.
