Government approves first new UK deep coal mine in three decades

The UK government has given the green light for a proposed new mine in Whitehaven, Cumbria, which would extract coking coal both for steel production in the UK and for export to Europe and would become the UK’s first new deep coal mine in 30 years. Yet the move was lambasted by environmental campaigners and climate change experts as being a retrograde step.

Norwegian tax break will increase gas and oil supply to Europe

The energy crisis in Europe triggered by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has left the continent short of hydrocarbon supplies and increasingly reliant on LNG imports. However, Norway is expected to increase oil and gas supplies to Europe following a record-breaking sanctioning boom on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), reports Rystad Energy.

Norway logs largest hydrocarbon discovery in 10 years

The largest gas and condensate discovery on the Norwegian Continental Shelf since 2013 was recently announced. Meanwhile, the proposed Barents Sea pipeline could be back on Norway’s agenda, according to Wood Mackenzie, who also says there is a ‘compelling’ business case for development of the UK’s Rosebank and Cambo fields, west of Shetland.

Qatar to increase LNG production capacity by nearly 85%

Running counter to the COP28 agreement to transition away from fossil fuels, QatarEnergy has announced that it is proceeding with a new LNG expansion programme, the North Field West project, that will increase the kingdom’s production capacity to 142mn t/y before the end of this decade, representing an increase of almost 85% from current production levels.

Plug and abandonment innovation aims to seal 100,000 methane-leaking wells by 2034

Rockit, a cleantech initiative from Heriot-Watt University, Scotland, has unveiled ambitious plans to help seal 100,000 methane-leaking wells within the next decade using new chemical injection technology. Meanwhile, a new study by the North Sea Transition Authority suggests that increased well interventions could offer cheaper, easier and cleaner oil and gas production from the UK Continental Shelf.

UK North Sea emissions down three years in a row

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from UK offshore oil and gas production were cut for the third consecutive year in 2022 as the sector continued its drive to reach net zero by 2050, according to the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA). Meanwhile, Norway and the UK are reportedly ‘on course to achieve significant milestones’ following increased investments, exploration success and production.

Nations of the Andes power ahead with plans for an interconnected regional electricity market and other grid improvements

The South American countries of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru have signed a declaration underlining a commitment to integrating their electricity grids to form an Andean regional electricity market. In other news, Bolivia is planning significant investments in its electricity infrastructure to enhance capacity and access to energy around the administrative capital of La Paz, while Chile is modernising regulations to improve electricity access and quality in remote regions. Additionally, Bolivia aims to reduce fuel imports with a new biodiesel plant due onstream later this year.
