New developments to boost Europe’s hydrogen value chain

The European Commission (EC) is to provide a further €1.4bn in state aid to support development of Europe’s hydrogen value chain. Meanwhile, plans for green hydrogen export between Scotland and Germany, and from Tunisia to Central Europe, have been unveiled.

UK government confirms £13.2bn Warm Homes Plan amid criticism of retrofit policy failures

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed full funding for the government’s Warm Homes Plan. However, a recent Parliamentary report has suggested that previous home energy efficiency government support schemes have actually set back efforts to decarbonise home heating and bring down energy bills.

NGO report calls for fossil fuel tax to help poor countries recover from climate change damage

A tax on the extraction of fossil fuels in the world’s richest advanced economies could raise $720bn by the end of the decade to support the world’s most vulnerable facing climate damages, according to a new report backed by over 100 climate organisations worldwide including Christian Aid, Greenpeace, Climate Action Network, Stamp Out Poverty and Power Shift Africa.

EU funding, AI R&D and UK CfD leadership are driving tidal and wave energy projects forwards

The marine energy sector has been in a stir recently. Recent projects include the deployment of Japan’s first ever 1.1 MW tidal turbine, a French pilot tidal project securing significant EU funding, and the development of an AI wave energy control project. Meanwhile, a new report from the Energy Industries Council (EIC) suggests the UK is emerging as a global leader in wave and tidal energy, accounting for nearly 40% of all wave and tidal projects worldwide.

Carbon capture is gaining momentum. The UK government has backed the Acorn and Viking CCS projects, while global CCS investment is set to hit $80bn within five years, according to a new report. At the same time, a new offshore collaboration is looking to scale carbon capture at sea.

UK government announces new £102mn funding for nuclear and hydrogen technologies

The UK government has further backed the future of nuclear power by investing £77mn to support nuclear fuel production and next generation advanced nuclear reactors in the UK. It has also unveiled a further £25mn of funding for innovative technologies that could generate hydrogen from biomass and waste and is seeking views on proposals to make domestic gas boilers hydrogen-ready from 2026. However, a Commons Committee warns that hydrogen is not a panacea to meeting net zero.

In April, the Energy Institute hosted its first Energy Policy Debate of 2024 at its London offices in New Cavendish Street.
