Australia continues to back gas while on road to net zero in Future Strategy report

The Australian government has acknowledged the role of gas as a ‘transition’ fuel ‘out to 2050 and beyond’ in its new gas strategy. However, the strategy has been criticised by some environmental organisations for continuing to support a fossil fuel whose emissions contribute to climate change. Meanwhile, the government’s latest budget offers financial support for renewables and hydrogen.

Renewable energy drives UK power generation past 50% for second year

Renewable energy sources generated a record 52.5% of the UK’s electricity in 2025, according to government data. This marks the second consecutive year renewables have exceeded 50% of total generation, up from 50.4% in 2024.

US utility trials 50-50 hydrogen/natural gas mix in CCGT

Georgia Power and Mitsubishi Power have completed trials blending hydrogen and natural gas fuels at both partial and full load on a combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) at a power plant near Atlanta, Georgia. They say the demonstration project is the first to validate 50% hydrogen fuel blending on an advanced class gas turbine, and is the largest test of this kind in the world to date.

Recent changes to the EU taxonomy, the system that classifies which investments are sustainable, are likely to support the growth of nuclear power in some countries. However, bringing new gas online within the defined emissions limit may be unrealistic, according to Rystad Energy research.

EU gas demand is projected to drop 7% by 2030, reinforcing a shift towards renewables and electrification, Ember reports. Despite this, LNG capacity is set to grow 54%, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) warns of global LNG oversupply as clean energy gains ground.
