Gas price volatility rises after Russia halts gas exports to Poland and Bulgaria

Russian gas giant Gazprom last week confirmed a halt in gas exports to Poland and Bulgaria over the two countries refusal to pay for supplies in Rubles. European gas prices reacted with renewed volatility, surging to nearly $40/mn Btu at the time. The total impact on European and global markets will be muted for now, but the situation could escalate quickly if other large countries or individual buyers are cut off from Russian supplies, and in the case of further sanctions related to Russian gas imports from the European Union (EU), writes Nikoline Bromander, Analyst – Gas and LNG, Rystad Energy.

Analysts’ reaction to Russian invasion of Ukraine

Market analysts point out that about a third of Russian gas supplies go to Europe, usually via a pipeline crossing the Ukraine. So there’s plenty of cause for concern and trepidation as the Russia-Ukraine situation escalates, and the world waits to see whether sanctions will bite or Russia will be tempted to staunch the flow of Russian oil and gas.

Looming end of Russian gas transit through Ukraine to West sets the stage for LNG and pipeline diversions

The European Union (EU) aims to ban Russian fuel imports by 2027. However, nearly half of Russia’s pipeline gas supplies to Europe and Moldova are still passing through Ukraine, totalling 13.7bn m³ in 2023, according to Rystad Energy. But the current five-year gas transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine is set to expire by the end of 2024, leading to concerns about the future flow of these gas volumes, warns the market analyst as the EU discusses the possibility of involving Azerbaijan in a future transit deal.

Global FLNG capacity will triple by decade-end, while LNG supply is set to surge in 2026, say new reports

Global floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) capacity is set to more than triple by 2030, according to a new report from Rystad Energy, driven by improved operational efficiencies and cost reductions. Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that global natural gas demand will shrink in 2025 but rebound in 2026 as a 7% surge in LNG supply, driven by the US, Canada and Qatar, eases tight market fundamentals and revives Asian demand.
