Swedish government rejects 13 offshore wind projects over defense concerns

In an unexpected move, the Swedish government has rejected applications for 13 offshore wind power projects in the Baltic Sea, citing defense concerns. The controversial decision halts projects totalling nearly 32 GW of potential installed power, equivalent to approximately 140 TWh of annual electricity production. Critics regard the announcement as a massive setback for renewable energy in the country, despite the government approving the Poseiden floating offshore wind project.

Gas price volatility rises after Russia halts gas exports to Poland and Bulgaria

Russian gas giant Gazprom last week confirmed a halt in gas exports to Poland and Bulgaria over the two countries refusal to pay for supplies in Rubles. European gas prices reacted with renewed volatility, surging to nearly $40/mn Btu at the time. The total impact on European and global markets will be muted for now, but the situation could escalate quickly if other large countries or individual buyers are cut off from Russian supplies, and in the case of further sanctions related to Russian gas imports from the European Union (EU), writes Nikoline Bromander, Analyst – Gas and LNG, Rystad Energy.

Analysts’ reaction to Russian invasion of Ukraine

Global energy markets face unprecedented uncertainty and a 1.5°C pathway remains increasingly challenging

The latest Global Energy Perspective report from McKinsey & Company finds that global energy markets ‘face unprecedented uncertainty’ as the economic rebound after the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered price spikes for multiple commodities, and the conflict in Ukraine has led to further increasing energy prices and security of supply concerns. As a result, a 1.5°C pathway remains ‘increasingly challenging’.

The new energy trilemma – why national security is reshaping the global energy transition
