Exploring the challenges of net zero: energy security, LNG markets and Saudi Arabia’s decarbonisation plans

Despite numerous governments making plans to move to net zero, and climate activists agitating for faster decarbonisation, consumer behaviours are yet to change. In part this is due to obstacles and roadblocks that were not foreseen when the plans were originally implemented but are now being encountered. These include the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the challenges of delivering a multilateral approach. The WPC Energy UK National Committee Expert Workshop 2024 hosted by Deloitte at its London office on 31 October considered these factors and other challenges. Nnamdi Anyadike reports.

Poland’s coal endures but sun shines on alternatives

Coal has powered Poland since the Communist era, a symbol of economic self-sufficiency and national pride. Coal once employed 400,000 workers across 70 mines; today, only 19 pits remain, employing 75,000 people, but they still produce around 60mn t/y. By contrast, nearly 200,000 people work in renewables – a number forecast to reach 300,000 by 2030. Jo Harper reports from Warsaw.

US and UK to ban imports of Russian oil

US President Joe Biden imposed an immediate ban on Russian oil and other energy imports on 8 March 2022, in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine. In a co-ordinated announcement, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Britain would phase out all oil imports from Russia, which accounts for about 8% of UK demand, by the end of the year.

New focus on European energy deals

A new ‘Energy Deals Tracker’ has been launched by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) to help present a clearer picture of how European Union (EU) member states’ diversification efforts could shape Europe’s energy policy in the long term – particularly the impact they could have on the bloc’s climate commitments.

Accelerating industrial decarbonisation: The Climate Club’s journey from COP28 to today

The Climate Club, initiated in 2022 by the G7, was launched at COP28 by 35 countries and the European Union. It focuses on decarbonising industry in emerging and developing economies where much of the industrial growth will happen in the following years. To achieve near-zero emissions in industrial production, the Climate Club seeks to foster cooperation and collective action, write Anna Lockwood, Junior Policy Analyst, and Celia Pastor, Climate Club Communications Officer, both of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which has hosted the Climate Club Interim Secretariat with the International Energy Agency (IEA) since mid-2023.

Ships in the night: Iran and Russia expand use of shadow fleets to avoid sanctions

Facing major sanctions from Europe, the US and elsewhere, Russia and Iran are increasingly resorting to the use of smuggling networks via shadow fleets and small ‘teapot’ refineries to export their oil. Lack of export options poses a major challenge to Russian gas

In the run-up to COP28, Russia called natural gas a ‘transitional fuel’ that could be used to reduce emissions. However, thanks to sanctions, sales of that fuel – transitional or not – are being restricted. While Russia can sell extra gas to Central Asia and use more domestically in the coming years, the volumes will be modest compared to those previously supplied to Europe. Longer-term ambitions for greater deliveries to China and Turkey, and as LNG, will be difficult to realise, reports Tim Crawford.
