Paris Agreement will reverse emissions growth after 2030, shows NDC analysis – plus pre-COP report roundup

Based on the latest NDCs, nationally determined contributions, the UN Climate Change Secretariat has forecast that total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2035, including from countries that have not submitted NDCs, could decrease by 12% compared to 2019 levels with land use, land-use change and forestry. Without land use, land-use change and forestry, emissions would drop by 7% compared to 2019 levels. Before the adoption of the Paris Agreement, emissions were projected to increase by between 20% and 48% compared to 2019 levels.

China sets its first absolute GHG emissions reduction target, as UN climate pledges build momentum

China has set its first-ever absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target, pledging to cut emissions by 7–10% from peak levels by 2035 while scaling up renewables and clean transport. The landmark announcement, made by President Xi at last month’s United Nations Climate Summit, came as nearly 100 nations have now submitted or unveiled new targets ahead of COP30 next month.

COP28 Perspective: My hopes and fears ahead of UN Climate Summit

COP28 could be the moment when the world goes beyond commitments and starts taking meaningful action for a clean energy transition; although, equally, it may not be. Damilola Ogunbiyi HonFEI, CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All and Co-Chair of UN-Energy, previews the event.

Trees reveal climate surprise – bark removes methane from the atmosphere

While trees have long been known to benefit the climate by removing CO₂ from the atmosphere, new research has revealed an additional climate benefit. Microbes hidden within tree bark can absorb methane – a powerful greenhouse gas – from the atmosphere.

Plug and abandonment innovation aims to seal 100,000 methane-leaking wells by 2034

Rockit, a cleantech initiative from Heriot-Watt University, Scotland, has unveiled ambitious plans to help seal 100,000 methane-leaking wells within the next decade using new chemical injection technology. Meanwhile, a new study by the North Sea Transition Authority suggests that increased well interventions could offer cheaper, easier and cleaner oil and gas production from the UK Continental Shelf.

It’s all downhill for fossil fuels now – RMI

While negotiators at COP27 were struggling last week to reach an agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions, a new report from the US suggests that a successful energy transition is already inevitable and will be rapid. New Energy World’s Editor-at-Large Steve Hodgson takes a look.

First ever global registry of fossil fuels launched, while North Sea emissions continue to fall

Transparency on fossil fuel supply has taken a major step forward as what is claimed to be the first public database of emissions from production and combusting reserves worldwide is published. Meanwhile, the North Sea oil and gas industry is reportedly on track to meet early emissions reduction targets, according to a separate report.

Fossil fuel companies must become part of the solution instead of part of the problem

The fossil fuels industry needs to demonstrate greater leadership and should be at the forefront of a rapid but orderly transition to a net zero energy system in the UK and around the world, argues Bob Ward FEI, Policy and Communications Director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

UK North Sea emissions down three years in a row

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from UK offshore oil and gas production were cut for the third consecutive year in 2022 as the sector continued its drive to reach net zero by 2050, according to the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA). Meanwhile, Norway and the UK are reportedly ‘on course to achieve significant milestones’ following increased investments, exploration success and production.

The urgent need to reduce our energy demand

It’s a combination of reducing demand, together with broader social changes, that is needed for countries to deliver on net zero ambitions, writes John Barrett of the UK’s Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions (CREDS).
