The issue is not that we are generating too much renewable energy. The challenges of electrification of industry are contemplated on both sides of the English Channel

Electrification of industry could deliver more than 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions reductions needed by industry to help reach the UK’s net zero targets, so long as a supportive policy environment is in place. So finds a new report from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) and the Aldersgate Group. Meanwhile, European trade association Eurelectric is calling for an ‘Electrification Bank’ to be established, to support industry electrification across Europe.

EC sets out action plan to accelerate roll-out of grid networks

The European Commission (EC) has set out an action plan to accelerate the roll-out of electricity grids in the European Union (EU). It has also proposed a 12-month extension of the emergency measures introduced last year in response to the energy crisis.

Network reinforcement isn’t enough – we need smarter maintenance decisions

Electricity networks are being asked to do far more than they were ever designed for. In response, the instinctive answer is reinforcement. Whilst it’s essential, it’s by no means a silver bullet, and rebuilding entire networks quickly enough to keep pace with change is neither practical nor affordable. The real opportunity in modernising the grid lies in intelligence – understanding how high-voltage (HV) assets like transformers, switchgears and cables are behaving, and using that data to make better informed decisions about when and where to act, writes Jonathan Lewin, Head of HV Monitoring at power engineering company EA Technology.
