UK electricity networks accelerate grid connections of more than 200 energy projects

Some 7.8 GW of clean energy projects in the UK, more than double the output of Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, have had their connection offer dates brought forward by up to 10 years through the new Technical Limits programme, which is allowing projects to connect to lower-voltage distribution networks prior to reinforcement of the high-voltage transmission network, reports National Grid.

Construction starts on Scotland-England subsea connector

Construction has begun on what will be the UK’s longest subsea electricity transmission link, one of four planned ‘electricity superhighways’ that will help decarbonise the country’s energy system. Meanwhile, 10 GW of ‘zombie’ projects have been removed from the grid connection queue to free up vital grid capacity; but more work is needed.

Vietnam’s direct power purchase agreement decree could pave the way for new renewables era

Vietnam has taken a major step towards a sustainable energy future with the introduction of a new direct power purchase agreement (DPPA) decree, allowing fully private ownership, transmission, sale and purchase of renewable energy for the first time. Issued last month, the decree enables the creation of private electricity utilities parallel to the state utility, Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), and is set to significantly accelerate the development of renewable energy in the country, according to analysis by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).

Australia scales up battery storage nationwide as states race to replace retiring coal

Synergy has commissioned Australia’s largest operational battery energy storage system (BESS), the 500 MW Collie BESS in the state of Western Australia. And Octopus has acquired the 1.2 GW Hansworth BESS in New South Wales, which will take over as the largest in the country once fully connected to the electricity grid.

Funding approved for power line to Mozambique’s first utility-scale wind farm

The African Development Bank has approved $43.6mn for a new transmission line in Mozambique, advancing efforts to deliver clean power from the country’s first utility-scale wind project. The announcement comes as President Daniel Chapo reiterated Mozambique’s broader commitment to renewable energy expansion, highlighting plans to scale up solar, wind and hydro capacity to meet domestic demand and supply southern Africa.

UK’s largest BESS begins commercial operations, while BESS connection queue exceeds 2030 grid requirements twice over

BW ESS and Sungrow have begun commercial operations at the 100 MW/331 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Bramley, Hampshire, the largest to be brought online in the UK to date. Meanwhile, analysis by Cornwall Insight suggests that the BESS connection queue currently exceeds the UK’s 2030 grid requirements twice over.
