Our sector needs diversity, not discrimination

‘Half of survey respondents have experienced or witnessed LGBTQIA+ discrimination in the UK energy workplace.’ Not a headline you thought you’d see in 2024. And not a headline you’d expect in the UK, but this is the reality. I hope this comes as a shock to most of us who are allies of marginalised groups. But for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, it will come as no surprise. They know that just for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or queer that they’re more likely to experience discrimination at work including derogatory marks, bullying and being outed without consent, writes Louise Bailey, OVO Belonging Lead and a board member of Pride in Energy.

Feeling stressed: How to establish an effective framework for mental health in the workplace

Mental health is a sensitive issue, particularly when it comes to the working environment. Deloitte estimates that the cost of absence and ‘presenteeism’ (that is, working while feeling ill, depressed or stressed and therefore underperforming) by employees cost UK business £24bn in 2020–2021. While employee turnover has increased by 25% since 2019, mostly driven by poor mental health – which employers claim is the primary cause of long-term absence from work, according to a thought-provoking new publication by the Energy Institute (EI).
