Breakthrough discoveries in carbon capture conversion for ethylene production, and producing hydrogen from seawater

A team of researchers at University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has discovered a way to convert 100% of CO₂ captured from industrial exhaust into ethylene, a key building block for plastic products. Meanwhile, at McGill University in Canada, scientists have identified a potential method for producing hydrogen from the oceans.

Pilot project demonstrates feasibility of large-scale hydrogen storage, as new measurement innovations are also announced

Hydrogen is expected to play an important role in the transition to cleaner energy. Recent advances from the HYBRIT large-scale hydrogen storage pilot project, the launch of a DNV joint industry project focused on hydrogen flow measurement, and sensor developments from Manchester University and Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute are paving the way for its safe storage and deployment across various industry sectors.

Decarbonising UK industry: IDRIC’s transformative impact

Since its launch in 2021, the UK Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) has developed an influential network of over 700 industries, trade associations, governmental/public bodies and research institutions, to accelerate the pace and scale of industrial decarbonisation. As the organisation nears the end of its current phase of work, its Director, Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer, also the Robert Buchan Chair in Sustainable Energy Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, looks back over four busy years.

EU funding, AI R&D and UK CfD leadership are driving tidal and wave energy projects forwards

The marine energy sector has been in a stir recently. Recent projects include the deployment of Japan’s first ever 1.1 MW tidal turbine, a French pilot tidal project securing significant EU funding, and the development of an AI wave energy control project. Meanwhile, a new report from the Energy Industries Council (EIC) suggests the UK is emerging as a global leader in wave and tidal energy, accounting for nearly 40% of all wave and tidal projects worldwide.
