Powering ASEAN’s next chapter: grids, growth and the AI future

Southeast Asia’s energy transition starts from a very different place than the one unfolding in Europe or North America. National Grid’s new Viking Link electricity interconnector between the UK and Denmark – said to be the world’s longest land and sea subsea power cable – has begun operations.

Record-breaking power interconnector laid

The British and Danish electricity grids are now physically connected for the first time, following the completion of cable works on the Viking Link interconnector. Stretching for 475 miles, it is the world’s longest land and subsea interconnector, according to project partners UK National Grid and Danish system operator Energinet.

UK to build world’s largest cross-border power line

Plans have been unveiled for what is claimed would be the world’s largest-of-its-kind electricity link connecting offshore wind between the Netherlands and the UK. The LionLink project aims to support decarbonisation and energy independence and strengthen UK, Dutch and European security of supply.

UK signs offshore wind farm investment pact with Europe

UK Energy Secretary Ed Milliband has signed a major offshore wind investment pact in Hamburg with eight European countries including Norway, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Ireland and Belgium. Together, under the ‘Investment Pact for the North Seas’, the energy ministers committed to building 15 GW of offshore wind per year over the period 2031–2040.
