New fossil project approvals must consider Scope 3 emissions, rules UK Supreme Court

The UK Supreme Court ruled last week in favour of a climate campaigner in her legal challenge against plans to drill for oil in Surrey, in a case which some say could set a precedent restricting plans for future fossil fuel extraction projects in the UK.

Shell wins appeal against court order to cut GHG emissions

Shell has won its appeal against a landmark 2021 court ruling that had ordered the company to reduce its absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45% by the end of 2030. Environmental organisations seeking to accelerate climate action through litigation decried the ruling, vowing to continue their efforts.

International Court of Justice publishes landmark opinion regarding climate change accountability

The UN’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) gave a landmark ‘advisory opinion’ on 23 July stating that nations can be held legally accountable for their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, the opinion is non-binding.
