Understanding health and safety for offshore wind

No longer in its infancy, the global offshore wind industry is nevertheless still in a dynamic growth phase and is perhaps the key future electricity generation option. Here, David Griffiths reports as the new Chair of the industry’s health and safety organisation, G+, which is run in partnership with the Energy Institute.

South Korea’s energy transition gathers pace

South Korea has announced key policy developments in its energy transition. The country’s 11th Basic Plan for Long-Term Electricity Supply and Demand (BPLE) aims to expand renewables’ share in the country’s energy mix, while the new OSW Promotion Act will streamline offshore wind development. Such moves are attracting new investment; for example, Deep Wind Offshore is teaming up with KHNP to develop 3 GW of wind projects offshore South Korea, and Vena Energy is committing $200mn to the Yokji offshore wind farm.

France and China push the boundaries of offshore wind as UK trade body advises caution on work safety

France has debuted its first floating offshore wind farm and China is testing what is claimed to be the world’s largest offshore wind turbine. Meanwhile, unprecedented growth in the global offshore wind sector is reported to have been accompanied by a rise in injury rates.

UK tightens controls on industrial, power and aviation emissions

The UK Emissions Trading Scheme Authority has announced a package of reforms to tighten limits on industrial, power and aviation emissions from 2024. Meanwhile, the UK government has been called upon to implement new policies to stop net zero investment going abroad and to reform the annual clean power auctions process to maximise benefits for consumers.

North Sea faces winds of change

The North Sea could power the UK to net zero, but over 90% of oil and gas firms are instead cutting investment, an Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) report warns. Meanwhile, Scotland has announced its first INTOG lease awards in the North Sea and Norway has launched a new offshore wind competition.
