Swedish government rejects 13 offshore wind projects over defense concerns

In an unexpected move, the Swedish government has rejected applications for 13 offshore wind power projects in the Baltic Sea, citing defense concerns. The controversial decision halts projects totalling nearly 32 GW of potential installed power, equivalent to approximately 140 TWh of annual electricity production. Critics regard the announcement as a massive setback for renewable energy in the country, despite the government approving the Poseiden floating offshore wind project.

EU plans rapid build-out of offshore wind in the North Seas

Nine European countries have signed an agreement aiming to jointly produce at least 120 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030 in the North Sea, Irish Sea, Celtic Sea and Atlantic Ocean, and at least 300 GW by 2050.

EC funding totalling nearly €17bn will support European energy transition projects

The European Commission (EC) has approved state funding to support the construction of a long-distance pipeline transport network for hydrogen in Germany, the deployment of two bottom-fixed wind farms offshore France, and the roll-out of biogenic carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in Sweden.

Scotland’s first commercial wind farm to be repowered

Ireland’s first licensing round awards 3 GW of offshore wind

Ireland recently announced the provisional results of the country’s first offshore wind auction under the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (ORESS 1). The round surpassed market expectations both in terms of the total volume of renewable energy procured and the low price at which it was secured. France commissions first wind farm offshore Brittany

The newly commissioned Saint-Brieuc wind farm is the second fully operational wind farm offshore France, following the inauguration of the Normandy-based Fécamp wind farm last month, and is the first to be located offshore Brittany. The project’s commissioning also comes just weeks after France announced the winners of the world’s first commercial-scale floating offshore wind auction.

The risk profile of offshore wind operations is lower than offshore oil and gas

Next month, offshore wind health and safety body G+ (which is supported by the Energy Institute) will publish its annual safety report. The safety record of offshore wind should be held up as a good example of industrial safety. In an expanding industry, injury rates are significantly lower than when G+ first started collecting data. But it might not seem like that, since with this growth has come greater scrutiny of risk management in the industry, writes G+ Technical Manager Mariana Carvalho AMEI.
