Generation 2050: When work isn’t enough

In 2021, when the UK hosted COP26, the Energy Institute (EI) launched the ‘Generation 2050’ campaign to capture the perspectives of those just starting out in industry, some of whom would be in senior leadership positions at the time the UK officially becomes net zero. Now, we continue the initiative by exploring the issues faced by young professionals working in the energy sector. Three prominent members of the EI’s Young Professionals Networks (YPNs) explain why they volunteer.

Not according to Energy Institute tutor Dr Yanos Michopoulos FEI, who believes that the art and science of leadership for future energy systems can be cultivated. Dr Michopoulos explains that beyond technical, planning and operating skills developed at the beginning of a professional career, energy industry leaders need soft skills to drive change, overcome challenges and explore opportunities. A new 10-day ‘Executive Leadership in Energy Programme’ by the Energy Institute aims to equip the next generation of energy leaders with these skills and more.

Highest annual growth of renewables jobs in 2023, reaching 16.2 million

In 2023, renewable energy employment experienced record growth, reaching 16.2 million jobs globally, up from 13.7 million in 2022, according to a joint report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Less positively, a separate study by SolarPower Europe has revealed stagnation in solar job growth, with workforce projections in Europe revised downwards to reach one million jobs by 2027.
