Scotland imposes moratorium on underground coal gasification

The Scottish government has imposed a moratorium on underground coal gasification. This is separate to the existing moratorium on onshore unconventional oil and gas, including hydraulic fracturing, which was announced by the Energy Minister Fergus Ewing in January. It is hoped a separate moratorium on underground coal gasification will allow for full and careful consideration of the potential impacts of this new technology, the government said.
