From the editor: How sustainable is bioenergy?

How sustainable, or ‘green’ is bioenergy, the term that includes energy from everything from solid biomass to sewage gas? It depends – wood-fuelled boilers and biomethane-producing anaerobic digestion plants have been around for many years, but attitudes seem to be hardening against all but the most efficient use of organic material as an energy source.
