The energy industry has long recognised the potential for hydrogen to displace polluting fossil fuels in multiple sectors – from road transport to domestic heating. But, until recently, opportunities had only been highlighted in theory, rather than trialled in practice.
Unconventional gases are the first theme of this month’s Energy World, and with promising commercial projects beginning to take shape, it’s little surprise that hydrogen takes centre stage.
On page 14, Robert Stokes looks at how the Netherlands is positioning itself to be a world leader in all things hydrogen. A second piece examines the technical specifications of hydrogen vehicle recharging stations, which are still nowhere near as common as their battery-electric charging counterparts.
The issue’s next theme is decentralised energy – another focus of much research and development in the industry. First up, Andrew Williams explores the potential presented by ‘virtual’ power plants. The next two articles both delve into the expanded role of district heating in a low carbon future.
