World’s first carbon neutral liner vessel

AP Moller-Maersk is accelerating its efforts to decarbonise marine operations and has unveiled plans to launch what it claims will be the world’s first carbon neutral liner vessel by 2023 – seven years ahead of its original 2030 target.

The new methanol feeder vessel will able to carry 2,000 20-foot containers and be deployed in one of the company’s intra-regional networks. While the vessel will be able to operate on standard very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), the plan is to operate the vessel on carbon neutral e-methanol or sustainable bio-methanol from day one.

Furthermore, all future Maersk-owned newbuild vessels will have dual fuel technology installed, enabling either carbon neutral operations or operation on VLSFO.

AP Moller-Maersk is targeting a 60% relative CO₂ reduction from shipping by 2030 and net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050.
