Clean hydrogen for Norwegian chemicals hub

Inovyn – a division of UK chemicals giant Ineos – plans to build a 20 MW electrolyser to produce ‘green’ hydrogen using zero carbon power at its site in Rafnes, Norway.

According to the company, the project will lead to a minimum reduction of around 22,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year from its chemicals manufacturing processes. The site will also serve as a hub to provide hydrogen to Norway’s transport sector.

Inovyn is aiming to produce enough additional hydrogen per day to fuel up to 400 buses or 1,600 taxis. It’s currently in talks with transport companies to establish a network of refuelling stations in Norway to provide buses, trucks and taxis with green hydrogen. The Norwegian government is also hoping to transform Rafnes – an industrial hub – into a ‘climate positive’ region by 2040.
