In the maritime world, the pressure to reduce emissions has centred on the folowing:

  • heavy fuel oil + scrubbers
  • low-sulphur gas oil
  • LNG

The last-named has strong potential, with 175 LNG vessels operating globally, and 200 more on order. The most appropriate application is to cruise ships with their regular repetitive routes. Although the maritime GHG emissions are only 2.5% at present, this level could increase dramatically by 2050.
