INEOS to invest in green hydrogen production

Global chemical major INEOS has announced plans to invest over €2bn in ambitious green hydrogen electrolysis projects across Europe. Through its subsidiary Inovyn, which claims to be Europe’s largest electrolysis operator, INEOS plans to build the first plants in Norway, Germany and Belgium over the next 10 years, with further projects mooted for the UK and France.

The first unit will be a 20 MW electrolyser, located in Norway, to produce clean hydrogen through electrolysis of water using renewable electricity. The plant is estimated to be able to cut CO2 by at least 22,000 t/y at INEOs’ operations at Rafnes – serving as a hub to provide hydrogen to the Norwegian transport sector.

There are also plans to build a 100 MW electrolyser at INEOS’ Koln site for production of green ammonia, cutting carbon emissions over 120,000 t/y, with potential for an e-fuels plant utilising power-to-methanol applications at commercial scale.

‘Green hydrogen represents one of our best chances to create a more sustainable and low carbon world,’ commented INEOS Chairman Jim Ratcliffe. And said, INEOS intends to work closely with European governments to ensure the necessary infrastructure is put in place to facilitate hydrogen’s major role in the new Green Economy.
