New funding to help South African energy transition
The UK, US and EU have agreed to provide South Africa with some $8.5bn to help shift the country away from coal, its major power source, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced at the UN COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.
In preparation for COP26, South Africa submitted a revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to reduce domestic carbon emissions between 350–420mn tCO2eq by 2030.
