Further progress in the expansion of battery-electric road  depends on comparable developments in both battery  technology and the number of charging points. In March 2022, the latter in UK was estimated to be 18 693, with a total of 50 263 connections. Re the former, sodium-ion batteries are potentially cheaper than lithium-ion versions but are heavier, hence further research is still required.
