In US, Progress Rail is working with the DOE Argonne laboratory to decarbonise the freight rail industry. The three-pronged approach comprises a computer-derived combustion system with resulting engine design, followed by laboratory testing of bio and renewable diesel fuels to assess torque, power, efficiency, emissions and effects on engine hardware.
