Safety insights for the adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel, New Energy World, 6 June 2025

In the marine world, ammonia is being evaluated as a viable alternative fuel for propulsion, with 50 ammonia vessels on order, hence serious studies re handling safety are under way.   Production will depend on renewable electricity.   Advantages include low flammability and fire risk, plus no sulphur content.   Storage will be required as a liquid at approximately 1 bar and mixture temperature of  -30°C.   It corrodes copper, brass, zinc and their alloys.
