Hope springs eternal

In Canada, although the oil sand deposits contain over 170 bn bbl of recoverable bitumen, production has been hindered through costs and environmental activists to about 1.4 mn b/d. However, interest and financial backing is being revived, and an output of 2.4 mn b/d is predicted by end 2013. Major technical problems involve water usage and greenhouse gas emissions, but many ingenious solutions are being proposed and applied.
