The rise of the NOC continues

For most of the twentieth century, the story of oil (and gas) production has usually focused on the Rockefeller era, the break-up of Standard Oil, and the Seven Sisters pushing at the frontiers of wilderness and technology. Only after the 1973 Yom Kippur war, the subsequent OPEC oil embargo and the quadrupling of oil prices, did people in the West wake up to the possibility that this supremacy could be challenged.
