Modern offshore plant is very congested, with huge numbers of pipes, equipment and structure crammed into modules and process areas. This results in many inaccessible components and plant items. The tops of pipes, vessels and structures are often tight to deckheads and bulkheads, located under decks packed tightly together and sometimes encased in other fixtures. Because of this the current management of corrosion - condition inspections may be masking some real threats to safety and production, explains Ian Cordingley, Managing Director of Strategic Corrosion Management.
