Blackfriars Solar Bridge
Network Rail, First Capital Connect and Solarcentury have launched what they call the world’s largest solar bridge, in which an array of 4,400 photovoltaic panels crown the revamped Blackfriars railway station, which is sited on a bridge over the Thames in London. The array provides up to half of the station’s energy and reduces its carbon emissions by an estimated 500 tonnes per year.
David Statham, Managing Director of First Capital Connect which runs Blackfriars station, said: ‘Electric trains are already the greenest form of public transport – this roof gives our passengers an even more sustainable journey. The distinctive roof has also turned our station into an iconic landmark visible for miles along the River Thames.’
The design and installation of the 6,000 m2 of PV panels was carried out by Solarcentury.
