New fossil power projects in South Korea, Turkey, Indonesia
First to South Korea, where a 250 MW cogeneration plant is planned for the Gunjang industrial zone in the city of Gunsan in western South Korea. The ‘Seagull’ plant will feature turbines from Siemens Energy and is being built for the South Korean company eTEC E&C. The Seagull plant will provide electricity to the grid as well as heat for the surrounding industries. It is planned to be completed in 2016.
Siemens is also supplying two gas turbines and generators to the South Korean Hanwha Engineering & Construction Corporation for a new power plant in Biskra, Algeria. The 460 MW plant will be constructed in the capital city of Biskra province, in the north-east of Algeria. Siemens will supply two Model SGT5-4000F gas turbines, two SGen5-1000A generators as well as technical field assistance during the erection and commissioning phase.
Meanwhile, in Turkey, Siemens Energy is supplying two SST-5000 steam turbines (pictured) along with auxiliary and ancillary systems for the lignite-fired Soma Kolin power plant in the western province of Manisa. There are large lignite reserves in the region. The 510 MW plant is being constructed by the Chinese enterprise Harbin Electric International Company The plant is scheduled to commence commercial operation in 2017.
Finally, the first of a series of marine supplied compressed natural gas (CNG) power plants, and the first in Indonesia, is in operation on Bintan Island. The 6 MW plant will be operated with CNG supplied by PLN Batam and transported to Bintan by ship. The plant is the first of a series endorsed by PR PLN, the Indonesian government-owned electricity grid, and part of a blueprint to replace existing diesel generators on Indonesian islands. MAXpower Indonesia, which owns and operates the plant, aims to invest $65mn over two years to deliver 100 MW of gas-fired power to Indonesia. The plants will reduce carbon emissions by half compared to traditional diesel-fired plant, says MAXpower.
