Some of these functions passed from DECC to the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) on 1 April 2015.

Onshore and offshore licensing rounds generally take place every other year.

The 14th Landward (onshore) Licensing Round occurred on 28 July 2014. The government announced it as a step aimed at 'creating the right framework to accelerate unconventional oil and gas development in a responsible and sustainable way.'
