New EC offshore safety directive

The European Commission has published a new Offshore Safety Directive, following a comprehensive review of the regulatory framework around Europe after the Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. The new directive aims to help prevent accidents, as well as respond promptly and efficiently should one occur.

The directive is broadly based on the UK’s current offshore safety regime in accordance with the UK’s Health and Safety Executive, and includes requirements relating to licensing, environmental protection, emergency response and liability, as well as safety.
