Global energy investment is set to total more than USD 3.3 trillion by the end of 2025

Energy markets comprise the trade and supply of electricity, gas, and liquid fuels, involving generation, transmission, and distribution. Generated energy is sold on the wholesale market, distributed to consumers through established systems, and regulated to ensure fair access and prices. In the UK, privatised energy markets are overseen by Ofgem, which promotes fair competition and consumer interests.

Globally, investment is moving towards renewables, grid flexibility, and low carbon transport. The transition to a low carbon economy demands appropriate policies and regulatory frameworks. The government often needs to guide private investments in capital-intensive, long-term energy infrastructure projects. New market structures are essential to encourage low carbon investments while maintaining stability and conventional energy sources. Enhanced interconnection through cross-border infrastructure can also help create sustainable, cost-effective energy systems and redefine investment priorities.
