Global nuclear generation rose 4% in 2021; UK closes Hinkley Point B

Global nuclear generation increased by 100 TWh to reach 2,653 TWh in 2021, rising by 4%, to meet 10% of the world’s electricity demand, according to the latest world nuclear performance report from the World Nuclear Association. This is the third highest ever total for global generation from nuclear, just short of the 2,657 TWh output of 2019 and 2,660 TWh in 2006, and re-establishes the upward trend in nuclear generation seen since 2012, following a decline in 2020.

Kick-starting a global low-carbon ammonia industry

As one of the most-used petrochemicals in the world, ammonia offers numerous decarbonisation and energy market opportunities, including the potential to provide 100mn tonnes into the power sector by 2050 in a ‘high-case scenario’, according to a new report from Wood Mackenzie. However, without strong policy support, low-carbon ammonia may remain an untapped market.

New gas power plants needed to ‘reinforce’ energy supply – UK government

The UK government has said it will support the building of new gas-fired power stations to replace existing plants that are ageing and soon to retire in order to ensure the country’s long-term energy security. In response, critics said the announcement runs counter to the UK’s commitment for a net zero electricity grid by 2035 and to phase out fossil fuels by 2050.
