UN chief calls for a windfall tax and advertising ban for fossil fuels

UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for a windfall tax on the profits of fossil fuel companies to help pay for the fight against climate change, as well as an outright ban on fossil fuel advertising. Meanwhile, newly published reports suggest no new fossil fuel projects will be needed in the transition to net zero; stronger plans are needed to meet the COP28 goal of tripling global renewable capacity by 2030; and Europe is in danger of missing its 2030 net zero targets.

Octopus signs ‘world’s biggest’ battery-leasing deal with Gresham House

China solidifies lead in global electrolyser market

China’s national plan identifies hydrogen as a key element in its low-carbon energy transition strategy, targeting 200,000 t/y of green hydrogen production by the end of 2025. However, the latest analysis from Rystad Energy suggests China will exceed that volume by the end of 2024. It forecasts that about 2.5 GW of hydrogen electrolyser capacity will have been installed by the end of the year, producing 220,000 t/y of green hydrogen, some 6,000 t/y more than the rest of the world combined.

A lot of effort is going into hydrogen-fuelled transport solutions. These are usually fuel cells generating electricity to power electric motors. But some manufacturers see hydrogen as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines to power vehicles directly, reports Toby Clark.

Who is going to do the work?

Skills take the longest to develop but are the most valuable in the whole supply chain, according to Matthew Knight, Head of Market and Government Affairs at Siemens, who spoke at the All-Energy conference and exhibition in Glasgow 15–16 May. Work to prepare for 2050, the UK’s net zero target, must start now, as the workers who will be in their professional prime by then are still at school. Many recent reports analyse skills needs (with some specifically focused on developing Scotland’s growing offshore wind sector). New educational initiatives are starting up nationwide, reports New Energy World Senior Editor Will Dalrymple.
