Arctic anxiety: Why Russia’s Arctic ambitions flounder

Despite global efforts to curb emissions, the Arctic faces serious challenges – not least the thawing of permafrost and destruction of ecosystems. Yet this also creates certain opportunities, primarily through the lengthening summer navigation season, during which ships can traverse Arctic waters without heavy icebreaker support. However, the route’s outlook is clouded by sanctions, financing constraints and a shortage of technology, explains Daniel Crawford.

Paris Agreement will reverse emissions growth after 2030, shows NDC analysis – plus pre-COP report roundup

Based on the latest NDCs, nationally determined contributions, the UN Climate Change Secretariat has forecast that total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2035, including from countries that have not submitted NDCs, could decrease by 12% compared to 2019 levels with land use, land-use change and forestry. Without land use, land-use change and forestry, emissions would drop by 7% compared to 2019 levels. Before the adoption of the Paris Agreement, emissions were projected to increase by between 20% and 48% compared to 2019 levels.

Power shift: Drax, RWE and Sunotec announce new BESS developments

As Europe’s energy landscape changes, so do its energy suppliers. Three cross-industry investments involving battery storage include Drax entering the short-duration storage market with a 260 MW UK BESS portfolio, RWE repurposing a former nuclear site for Germany’s largest battery project, and Sunotec partnering with Shell on an innovative cross-border financing deal in Central Eastern Europe.

Tracking the transition in the run-up to COP30

As energy leaders gather in Belém, Brazil, for COP30, the Energy Institute has published its annual Country Transition Tracker (CTT), which offers a timely and data-rich lens through which users can assess energy- specific transition progress. Stubbo Solar powers up and sets benchmark for circular energy future

ACEN Australia’s 400 MW Stubbo Solar project in central-west New South Wales (NSW) is the first backed by a long-term energy service agreement (LTESA) to reach full commercial operation in Australia. It is also the world’s first utility-scale solar project certified for full circularity under the Circular PV Alliance (CPVA) framework, guaranteeing that every one of the project’s 930,000 solar panels will be reused or recycled at the end of their life.

World’s hottest enhanced geothermal system reaches record 331°C

Mazama Energy reports that its pilot enhanced geothermal system (EGS) project in Newberry, Oregon, US, has achieved a bottomhole temperature of 331°C (629°F), setting ‘a new global benchmark’ in geothermal innovation, says the company.

EU launches €2.9bn plan to scale up sustainable fuels for aviation and shipping

The European Commission (EC) has unveiled a €2.9bn Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP) designed to accelerate the deployment of renewable and low-carbon fuels in aviation and maritime transport. It marks the first coordinated EU approach to financing the transition of both sectors.
