Solar and battery storage will lead US energy expansion in 2025, as the grid strives to meet forecast load growth

Solar and battery storage are expected to lead new US generating capacity additions in 2025, says the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Meanwhile, BloombergNEF and the Business Council for Sustainable Energy suggest a broad portfolio of sustainable energy solutions will be needed to meet anticipated load growth, in particular from rapidly advancing AI technologies and an increasing number of data centres.

Global energy transition needs to accelerate: latest DNV transition outlook reports

The global energy transition is ‘truly’ underway but needs to speed up, while greenhouse gas emissions are predicted to peak this year, according to DNV’s 2024 Energy Transition Outlook. ‘This is a milestone for humanity, but we must now focus on how quickly emissions decline,’ says DNV. ‘Worryingly, our forecast decline is very far from the trajectory required to meet the Paris Agreement targets.’ It’s a similar challenge in the UK. Europe’s solar dilemma: Competing with China while securing energy independence

In the early 2000s, Europe was at the forefront of solar PV production. However, as governments scaled back subsidies and incentives, they failed to compete with China’s state-backed manufacturing surge. Since 2011, China has invested over $50bn in new PV supply capacity – 10 times more than Europe. Making a dent in China’s production monopoly will be immensely challenging. But the EU could maintain leadership in solar installation and technology by strategically directing funding and diversifying supply chains, for example in the bloc’s upcoming Clean Industrial Deal, writes Charlie Bush.

BP pivots away from energy transition

BP has reset its corporate strategy in favour of production of oil and gas, and away from renewables. It has cancelled its target to reduce oil and gas production by 40% in 2030, is investing in new oil and gas projects, and cutting funding to its transition business. These changes come amid other cost-cutting actions.
