Tracking the transition in the run-up to COP30

As energy leaders gather in Belém, Brazil, for COP30, the Energy Institute has published its annual Country Transition Tracker (CTT), which offers a timely and data-rich lens through which users can assess energy- specific transition progress. Its author, Energy Institute Senior Energy Project Lead Gemma Fox, reports on the results and her assessment.

New financial models advance clean energy in Africa

New financial models are being implemented in Africa to boost renewable energy investments. These are of critical importance for a continent with abundant solar, wind, hydro and geothermal resources, but where around 600 million people (out of 1.5 billion in total) still lack reliable access to electricity. Samuel Okocha, Roland Mbonteh, Paul Cochrane and Andreia Nogueira describe recent initiatives, from pay-as-you-go schemes to large-scale leasing and government funding.

An internship model to close Africa’s green skills gap

As the world races towards net zero, Africa’s transition must not only be rapid but just. With the right approach, young Africans will drive this just transition for themselves. An example of that is a new internship model, piloted in 2025, whose low-cost design, adaptability to different geographies and partial cost-recovery mechanism through employer reimbursements make it a candidate for replication across Africa, writes founder Promise Chukwukadibia Nwogu.

What’s cooking? LPG and the clean cooking challenge in sub-Saharan Africa

Almost one-third of the world’s population, around 2.3 billion people, still rely on open fires or rudimentary stoves to prepare meals. In sub-Saharan Africa, four out of five people cook with wood, charcoal, animal dung or agricultural waste. Charlie Bush considers some of the options available for cleaner cooking, in particular the role of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a transitional energy solution.
