Deeper waters, shallower gains – why Rosebank and Jackdaw will not secure Britain’s energy future

Global energy markets face unprecedented uncertainty and a 1.5°C pathway remains increasingly challenging

The latest Global Energy Perspective report from McKinsey & Company finds that global energy markets ‘face unprecedented uncertainty’ as the economic rebound after the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered price spikes for multiple commodities, and the conflict in Ukraine has led to further increasing energy prices and security of supply concerns. As a result, a 1.5°C pathway remains ‘increasingly challenging’.

UK launches new offshore licencing round while new report says North Sea oil and gas development is at odds with climate goals

The UK’s North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has launched a new offshore licensing round as part of government plans to boost security of energy supplies. However, a new report from Global Energy Monitor claims that emissions from new oil and gas development in the North Sea could contribute to the UK exceeding its carbon budget for 2023–2037 by a factor of two.

As global emissions hit record high, world enters climate crunch time, warns UNEP report

Continuing current climate policies could ‘lead to a catastrophic temperature rise of up to 3.1°C’, warns the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in its latest annual Emissions Gap Report. However, it adds that the 1.5°C goal set out in the Paris Agreement is ‘still technically possible to meet’, but ‘only with a G20-led massive global mobilisation to cut all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, starting today’.

Why activists disrupted International Energy Week

Last month, activist group Fossil Free London disrupted the Energy Institute’s (EI) annual International Energy Week conference. Over the three-day event, they blockaded the venue’s entrance, protested outside and infiltrated the conference itself to demand no new oil and gas, and an end to the industry's ‘obscene’ profiteering.
