Offshore wind safety performance mixed, while record 61.9 million hours worked

Offshore wind activity amongst members of the G+ Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation, based at the Energy Institute, continued to surge in 2023, with a record 61.9 million hours worked, a 39% increase from 2022. However, total reported incidents have risen, according to a new report.

UN watchdog approves plan for release of Fukushima waste water to the sea

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said that Japan’s plan to release waste water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea over the next three decades ‘complies with international standards’ and will have ‘negligible’ impact on the environment.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) began releasing treated waste water stored at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean on 24 August.

The risk profile of offshore wind operations is lower than offshore oil and gas

Next month, offshore wind health and safety body G+ (which is supported by the Energy Institute) will publish its annual safety report. The safety record of offshore wind should be held up as a good example of industrial safety. In an expanding industry, injury rates are significantly lower than when G+ first started collecting data. But it might not seem like that, since with this growth has come greater scrutiny of risk management in the industry, writes G+ Technical Manager Mariana Carvalho AMEI.
