Meanwhile, Germany and the UK are advancing supportive policies and identifying high-potential regions, signalling a global shift towards making geothermal a scalable, low-carbon energy source.

Saudi Aramco CEO calls phasing out oil and gas a ‘fantasy’

Saudi Aramco President and CEO Amin H Nasser said that the current energy transition strategy is ‘visibly failing’ on a number of fronts and has called on countries to abandon the ‘fantasy’ of phasing out oil and gas. The contentious remarks from the head of the world’s largest oil producer were made in the same week as a new report from IRENA concludes that an ‘urgent global course correction’ is needed to meet the COP28 goal of tripling renewables power capacity by 2030.

Cleanest-ever electricity recorded in the UK

The UK’s electricity was the cleanest ever in 2024, according to a new study from Carbon Brief, with CO₂ emissions per unit falling by more than two-thirds in a decade. The phasing out of coal means the country is now getting less than half as much electricity from burning fossil fuels as a decade ago. Over the same period, renewable generation has more than doubled.

A new report from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has found that several key challenges still need to be understood and addressed over the next decade to enable the speed and scale of deployment necessary to achieve 100% clean electricity, or a net zero power grid, in the US by 2035.
