CMA review clears UK fuel retailers of ‘profiteering’ but calls for an in-depth market investigation

While a review of competition in the UK road fuel market has cleared fuel retailers of ‘profiteering’, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) says there is ‘cause for concern in the growing gap between the price of crude oil when it enters refineries and the wholesale price when it leaves refineries as petrol or diesel’. As a result, the CMS has started an in-depth market investigation.

Heavy duty transport transition will rely more on hydrogen than batteries, according to new report

The global rush to zero emissions offers the transport sector two choices for decarbonisation, and among passenger vehicles it is clear the choice has already been made in favour of battery electric vehicles (EVs). However, despite some obstacles remaining, the hydrogen fuel cell is expected to dominate in the heavy-duty, long-distance trucking sector, according to Rethink Energy.

How to deliver a decarbonised transport network

Transport has represented one of the most intractable challenges as we try to piece together the decarbonisation jigsaw. Responsible for around a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, 95% of the world’s transport energy still comes from fossil fuels. Now, we’re at a critical juncture, as many of the developed western economies, including the UK, have set (some legally enforceable) targets for the end of sale of road vehicles powered by fossil fuels. The targets are linked to the ultimate goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 which means end-of-sale dates for most categories of road vehicles by 2040, or earlier, writes Claire Haigh, Managing Director of Zemo Partnership, the membership organisation for road decarbonisation.

Significant investment scale-up required to meet Australia’s hydrogen ambitions

Australia has ambitions to be a major hydrogen exporter as it transitions to a net zero economy; while new analysis suggests that running a hydrogen plane could be cheaper than traditional aircraft by 2035, providing the right taxation is in place. Elsewhere, plans have been announced for what is claimed will be Europe’s first commercial-scale hydrogen truck refuelling station with liquid hydrogen storage; and the world’s largest carbon-free green hydrogen plant reaches financial close.

UK’s largest blue hydrogen production hub given initial go ahead

The first phase of what will be the UK’s largest blue hydrogen production plant, located in Cheshire, north-west England, has been given the green light by the local planning authority. Meanwhile, the UK government has unveiled funding to develop a green hydrogen hub in the Tees Valley, north-east England.
