China’s next five-year plan backs clean energy but leaves emissions targets unclear, says CREA

China has released the draft outline of its 15th Five-Year Plan, setting out the country’s economic, energy and climate priorities for the period 2026–2030. The blueprint is broadly supportive of clean energy development, including a target to reduce CO₂ emissions per unit of GDP – carbon intensity – by 17% compared to 2005 levels between 2026–2030.

What would it take to decarbonise the US electric grid by 2035?

A new report from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has found that several key challenges still need to be understood and addressed over the next decade to enable the speed and scale of deployment necessary to achieve 100% clean electricity, or a net zero power grid, in the US by 2035. Achieving this goal would be a major stepping stone to economy-wide decarbonisation in the US by 2050.

UK’s largest blue hydrogen production hub given initial go ahead

The first phase of what will be the UK’s largest blue hydrogen production plant, located in Cheshire, north-west England, has been given the green light by the local planning authority. Meanwhile, the UK government has unveiled funding to develop a green hydrogen hub in the Tees Valley, north-east England.

Amid high energy costs and intensifying global competition, the initiative aims to position the green transition as a catalyst for economic resilience. However, while industry groups welcomed the measures, some environmental organisations have warned of gaps in implementation.

Spain is looking to establish itself as a leading producer of green hydrogen in Europe, as well as becoming a European hub for the development of sustainable aviation fuels, according to two separate new reports. Meanwhile, a new BP-Iberdrola partnership is to build the country’s largest green hydrogen project in a move that will help decarbonise BP’s Castellón refinery and see it transition into an integrated energy hub.

Decarbonising UK industry: IDRIC’s transformative impact

Since its launch in 2021, the UK Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) has developed an influential network of over 700 industries, trade associations, governmental/public bodies and research institutions, to accelerate the pace and scale of industrial decarbonisation. As the organisation nears the end of its current phase of work, its Director, Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer, also the Robert Buchan Chair in Sustainable Energy Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, looks back over four busy years.
